ELEVATOR

Peter S. of 17 Walnut Way stood awaiting the elevator doors to open. He was wearing a dark blue collared shirt that Martha had ironed for him, black slacks, and a satchel over his shoulder. He waited on the ground floor.

Peter had enjoyed a tasty breakfast with his wife Martha earlier that morning. Martha and he had lived alone for many years. Their three children had grown up, married and started families of their own. Peter had been the patriarch of the family for a long time now.

The two had sat at the time-worn kitchen table. Sunlight coming in through the lace curtained windows, they munched on whole grain toast with orange marmalade, low sugar. Coffee, a blend of half decaf half regular. Martha and he had talked about this and that. The electric bill that was due and the neighbor's new car sitting across the street.

Peter leaned over and kissed Martha on the cheek as she drank her coffee. A wave goodbye, and out the door he left.

When Peter arrived at the volunteer center, he entered from the sidewalk through the glass doors of the building. Six strides through the lobby, feeling a tad winded, and now standing before the elevator doors.

After waiting barely a minute, the elevator doors opened. Peter stepped inside, his satchel oddly feeling a little heavier. The only passenger, the doors closed behind him. Dimly lit, wall-papered, a little faded but still nice inside.

Looking at the buttons to push. Which one was it now? He tried to remember. His mind starting to dizzy.

A sudden tightness in his chest. Pain in his left arm, crumpling to the floor.

What's happening? he thought.

Oh no...No!

I'm all alone.

The pain in his chest becoming unbearable.

This can't be it. Is this how it ends? Not now, please.

Desperation.

Martha...Martha, she needs me...

The electric bill...my family...

A calming voice permeated the air around him.

"It will be alright."

The elevator became illuminated. It was filled with familiar loving faces. His father and mother were there, looking younger, and his beloved grandfather that used to take him fishing. His old best friend Tom, and caring Louise who was like a second mother to him growing up. The diner woman who had served him coffee for years. His niece that had died in the car accident. And so many other loved ones with arms outstretched embracing him in emanating love.

"It will be alright."

He relaxed, and accepted.

Love and light permeated his body and enveloped him. Joy filled his heart.

Peter S. of 17 Walnut Way rose up in the elevator.
